On September 4th, 2022, the Humanistic Buddhism Reading Association of Toronto hosted the "Irresistible Charm of Reading," an online gathering and sharing event via Zoom. Nearly 80 members from 21 reading groups participated.
Venerable Miao Mu, the Superintendent of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto and Advising Monastic of the Reading Association, introduced the theme of the event and encouraged everyone to explore and adapt to digital learning to break the barriers caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Venerable Master Hsing Yun wishes every Buddhist will read books, as reading can enhance our understanding and see reasons,” said Venerable Chueh Fan, the Abbess of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto. She also reminded all members, saying, "To lead a fruitful and happy life is to practice the Dharma taught by the Master.
Mabel Lam, the President of BLIA Toronto, shared a verse from the "Humble Table, Wise Fare," which encouraged everyone to utilize new technology and to read to enhance wisdom.
Totally six reading groups shared their insights. They exercised various expedient means, from reading a book, discussing an article, singing a song, introducing a Dharma verse, and watching videos. Their clear expressions and concrete examples get the audience to understand the Dharma with clarity.
