As the year-end festivities approached, the English Subchapter of the Buddha's Light International Association (BLIA) Toronto Chapter organized a heartwarming toy drive for the first time. With the generous support of the Fo Guang community, nearly 150 brand-new toys were collected and donated to the "Miracle on Main Street" toy drive, a project hosted by Peel Regional Police and the Tiger Jeet Singh Foundation. This initiative aimed to deliver warmth and care to underprivileged families, embodying the spirit of "giving joy" espoused by Fo Guang practitioners.
Throughout December, under the leadership of Subchapter President Martyn Knowles, members dedicated their weekends to collecting donations from members and volunteers. The response was enthusiastic, with contributions including stuffed animals, coloring books, toy cars, Play-Doh, and dolls—forming a vibrant and heartwarming collection of toys. By December 20, all donations had been carefully sorted and packed into nearly 150 individual items, ready to bring holiday cheer to children in need.
On December 20, President Martyn, along with Vice President Tyrie Norris, personally delivered the toys to Peel Regional Police headquarters. They were warmly received by Constable Jennifer Bissell, Chair of the Charity Coordination Team, who expressed deep gratitude for the compassion and generosity of the Fo Guang community. Constable Bissell noted that toy donations had been scarce this year, and these contributions would bring much-needed joy to children and families during the holidays.
President Martyn and Vice President Tyrie extended their heartfelt thanks to all who supported the campaign, emphasizing how the activity not only strengthened ties with the community but also shared the essence of Fo Guang Shan’s teachings. They expressed hopes to expand the initiative next year, bringing happiness to even more families and fostering harmony and warmth in society.
