On December 16th, BLIA Toronto Chapter Richmond Hill 1st, 2nd and 3rd subchapters (RHS) co-hosted their 2023 Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Markham Buddha’s Light Centre.Nearly 100 members were present, notable attendees included Monastic Advisor Ven. Miao Tsun, Ms. Mabel Lam and Ms. Rachel Fan, the President and Vice President of BLIA Toronto respectively.
The presidents of the three RH subchapters co-chaired the year-end meeting. Their opening remarks emphasized that the success of the subchapters’ activities is heavily dependent on having strong support from members. Each subchapter’s president delightfully reported that many new members are now also part of the FGS Toronto volunteer team.
In her address, Ms. Lam spoke of Coexistence and Coprosperity, the theme of the 2023 BLIA World General Conference, as the guiding principle of subchapter initiatives in the upcoming year. She acknowledged that environmentalism is the foundation for sustainability. From Vege Plan A pledges to hosting VegRun, individual and collective contributions are vital steps towards slowing global warming.
A Video encompassing major working reports of all RH subchapters’ activities was presented to members. Importantly, the RH 2nd Subchapter President, Peyton Kong, delivered a summary of important resolutions passed during the 2023 BLIA World General Conference.
Plans for 2024 were extensively discussed at the AGM meeting. The meeting Chairs presented an overview of planned activities and projects on behalf of their respective RH subchapter. Financial reports and proposed 2024 budget resolutions were unanimously passed. Upcoming activities were announced in the AGM, including but not limited to the 2024 Global Buddhist Exam, FGS of Toronto Lunar New Year Festival Activities, BLIA Toronto Annual General Meeting, and Volunteer Appreciation Dinner.
Toward the end of the AGM, Venerable Miao Tsun praised the collaboration between the subchapters and the dedication of the RHS members and executives. The success and growth of the BLIA community would be impossible without the talents and teamwork of the members.
The gathering joyfully concluded with a tea reception featuring delectable vegetarian food and a raffle ticket draw.
