On the afternoon of April 5th, Venerable Chueh Fan, the Abbess of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, led a team of 14 devotees to partake in the celebration of “International Buddhist Day” at West End Buddhist Temple. An united front of participating Buddhist Temples showcased a wide diversity of Buddhist rituals. Through demonstration of offerings and chanting, the public became more acquainted with Buddhist practices and saw Buddhism as an important part of their community. This celebration was marked by keen support to push the UN to declare April 8th as International Buddhist Day. The mayor and city councillor of Mississauga were among the attendees.
Upon the completion of flowering offerings, representatives from temples gathered to chant and pray according to their respective traditions in Southern, Northern and Eastern Buddhism. FGS representatives, under the leadership of the Abbess, sincerely recited the Heart Sutra and Prayers for World Peace. Moreover, the Abbess delivered remarks on core concepts and spirits of Humanistic Buddhism. On behalf of the FGS community, Ven. Chueh Fan expressed gratitude for the Bhantes who paid tribute to the late founder of Fo Guang Shan, Venerable Master Hsing Yun at the time of his passing.
