In support of Fo Guang Shan’s 2025 Lunar New Year Lantern Painting Competition and Exhibition, Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto hosted a festive lantern painting event for children and youth on October 27. More than 120 participants of all ages—including children from English Dharma class, Chinese school students, Scouts, Dragon and Lion Dance teams, youth groups, and parents—gathered across two vibrant sessions to celebrate.
Venerable Zhi Guan, the Superintendent of FoGuang Shan Temple of Toronto, welcomed the enthusiastic turnout and shared Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s New Year blessing for the Year of the Snake: “There is a path ahead, and brightness is in sight. ”She encouraged everyone to make their New Year wishes visible through painting, highlighting the importance of the Three Acts of Goodness philosophy and inspiring participants to let their illuminated lanterns brighten Fo Guang Shan.
The event's purpose, Venerable Zhi Guan explained, was togather creative lanterns from around the world, sharing the spirit of kindness, beauty, and prosperity with visitors throughout the Lunar New Year. Venerable thanked parents for their support, emphasizing how this cultural event nurtures creativity and gives young artists a unique way to express their hopes for the year ahead.
A volunteer from the Chinese school led a painting demonstration, sharing techniques and helpful tips. Inspired, children and parents eagerly began their artistic creations. The event was more than just a painting session; it was a meaningful experience in cultural heritage, introducing students to traditional Chinese celebrations through creativity and family togetherness.
One young artist, Enrui Wu, painted a snake that symbolized more than its simple appearance. Envisioning it as travelling across the Eastern and Western Hemispheres day and night, Enrui expressed a journey toward the future. His parents shared their appreciation for the temple and teachers and were grateful for such an enriching experience.
The event concluded with a joyful group photo, capturing memories of a day filled with creativity, and cultural pride, and shared New Year wishes.
