On January 12, 2025, Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto hosted the "2024 Practicing the Buddha’s Way" Awards Ceremony, following the Completion of the 2024 Light Offering Dharma Service. The event recognized 18 outstanding students for their dedication to studying and applying the Dharma in daily life. The ceremony was attended by Abbess Venerable Chueh Fan, monastics, and over 200 devotees and students.
Venerable Chueh Fan presented certificates of recognition and "Little Novice Monk" photo frames, symbolizing the value of “staying true to one’s original aspirations,” to the awardees, praising their dedication to Buddhist learning and practice. She emphasized that practicing Buddhism goes beyond chanting, encompassing the cultivation of wisdom and spreading positivity to families, society, and the world. She also expressed gratitude for the favorable conditions that make Dharma learning possible, attributing them to the legacy of Venerable Master Hsing Yun, founder of Fo Guang Shan. Attendees were encouraged to dedicate the merits of their practice to those affected by recent wildfires in California, offering prayers for global harmony.
The ceremony featured a video showcasing moments from the FGS Toronto Humanistic Buddhism Courses, capturing the joy and dedication of students engaged in Buddhist studies and interest classes. The Senior Activity Class performed A Life of Gratitude, expressing heartfelt thanks to the monastics and volunteers who make Dharma learning opportunities possible.
The awards were divided into Gold and Silver categories, based on points earned through study and service. Betty Young, a Gold Award recipient, was honored with Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s calligraphy piece Ocean of Blessings for her nearly 30 years of service. A respected leader in the Social Education Team, Ms. Young expressed gratitude for the chance to learn and grow, pledging to continue contributing as a dedicated Buddha’s Light member.
Senior Activity Class student Qi Shao shared how the temple became her spiritual refuge after she moved to Mississauga in 2024. Participating in classes and Dharma services brought her immense joy and inspiration, motivating her to encourage others to embrace lifelong learning. Another Gold Award recipient, Laiyin Chan, described her transformative journey of applying Buddhist teachings to cultivate a peaceful and positive mindset. Her growth inspired her to practice the "Three Acts of Goodness" and "FourGivings," earning the admiration and support of her family.
In closing, Venerable Chueh Fan likened her pride in the students’ achievements to that of a parent seeing their children excel. She highlighted Fo Guang Shan’s Four Objectives, particularly the promotion of Buddhist teachings through cultural activities and the nurturing of talent through education.
