Fo Guang Shan Toronto Youth Buddhist Academy Concludes 2024 Fall Program

The 2024 Fall Program of the Fo Guang Shan Toronto Youth Buddhist Academy concluded on November 24, following the SundayDharma service. Venerable Chueh Fan, Abbess of Fo Guang Shan Toronto, delivered an inspiring message highlighting the significance of Buddhist education. She emphasized the temple’s commitment to offering programs for all age groups, with a particular focus on the importance of youth development and education in shaping future leaders.

The closing ceremony began with a recap video summarizing the program’s highlights, followed by heartfelt reflections from students who shared their transformative learning experiences.

This program, the first held since the pandemic, brought together 13 participants from Toronto, mainland China, Taiwan, and India, with an average age of 25. The group, comprising six males and seven females, completed a six-week curriculum running from October 19 to November 24.

The daily schedule included morning chanting, studying the Vimalakirti Sutra,meditation sessions, and teachings by Venerables. Afternoons featured practical assignments, lessons on Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s philosophy, and temple chores, whileevenings were devoted to story readings, group discussions, and eveningchanting. The program offered a well-rounded exploration of Buddhist teachings, combining theoretical study with practical application.

Students expressed their gratitude and growth during the sharing session.

Jude reflectedon Venerable Yi Kong’s lecture on The Changes and Constants in Su Dong Po’s Life, which deepened his appreciation for classical literature and helped him understand the Buddhist concept of “no-self.” This insight enabled him to navigate personal challenges with clarity and detachment.

Stephanie shared how Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s teachings on “emptiness” reshaped heroutlook on adversity. She realized that challenges are opportunities for growth and a way to support others, concluding that the future holds endless possibilities.

Danny found inspiration in Venerable Chueh Fan’s teaching on the Vimalakirti Sutra, especially the idea that “a pure heart creates a pure land.” He learned that letting go of attachments can transform challenges into stepping stones for growth.

Tom discovered that Buddhism is not just a faith but a practical wisdom for living, providing him with clarity and direction amid life’s busyness.

Nancy reflected on the art of true listening, inspired by Venerable Master Yi Kong’sconcepts of “letting go” and “lifting up.” She shared how this understanding taught her to embrace forgiveness and self-compassion.

Zhe emphasized the importance of mindfulness in daily life, expressing his desireto maintain his inner light and inspire others.

Tina spoke about pursuing goals with the right intentions and a non-attached mindset,emphasizing the importance of living purposefully and reflectively.

The students’ heartfelt reflections moved the audience, who responded with warmapplause.

Venerable Chueh Fan awarded certificates of completion to the students and presented them with copies of the English edition of “Passing the Light” and newly published works by Venerable Tzu Hui and Tzu Jung. She encouraged the students to stay true to their aspirations and consider furthering their studies at Fo Guang Shan Tsun Lin University to deepen their understanding of Buddhism.
