“If Not Me, Then Who?” Volunteers’ Aspiration to Take Care of the Temple

October 23, 2021

Due to the pandemic, all Dharma services and activities at Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto have been held online for the past two years. Many decoration materials have been stored in the storage behind the temple garage and space for a long time. To prevent the breeding of insects and to keep the temple environment neat, the members volunteered to clean up the storage spaces On October 16 and 23.

On October 16, a total of 11 volunteers moved out the wood and materials from the four storage spaces one by one, and made a detailed report based on the damage and frequency of use of these items to the Abbess, Venerable Chueh Fan, before they eliminated and sorted the items and placed them back into the storage space outside the temple garage. They managed to clear one cart of scrap even though they cherished the decoration materials and were very careful in deciding the items to be removed from the storage space.

Members of BLIA Toronto North York Sub-Chapter took the responsibility of painting the exterior on October 23. Under the leadership of sub-chapter advisor Ms. Candy Huang, 13 members were divided into two groups responsible for painting on metal and painting on wood. After listening to the instructions carefully, both groups collaborated and finished painting at 2 pm. A few members even helped to apply a second layer of paint on the bell and drum tower iron frame. In addition, Mr. Chen used oil to wipe the bell in front of the temple diligently to remove the oxidized green surface on the bell, restoring the original brilliance of the bell.

The Abbess, Venerable Chueh Fan, and sub-chapter monastic advisor, Venerable Ru Xing, led everyone in reciting sutras and praying for blessings before the volunteers started their chores.
