On Sept 11, the temple had its first painting maintenance. A total of 15 members from the Buddha's Light International Association of Toronto Mississauga sub-chapters arrived early in the morning to undertake the task of painting the temple railings.
Venerable Chueh Fan, the abbess of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, welcomed and thanked all members for their dedication to caring for the monastery. She explained that the effort is a cultivation practice. The good deeds plant good causes, and conditions are immeasurable.
The maintenance task was begun by chanting. The abbess led all members to recite the Heart Sutra and dedication of merits. Mr. Lo, from the maintenance department, explained the steps and procedure of the repair works. As it was the first paint job since the monastery was built in 1997, it needed to be stripped off the old paint before applying new paint to it.
BLIA members volunteered to support the temple maintenance as when they participating in the Drive-Thru Sangha Day Celebration event on Aug 29, many members noticed that the paint was peeling off from the railings.
One of the BLIA executive members Mr. Li expressed that it may look simple but painting takes a lot of patience as one needs to apply multiple coats of paint to make sure the entire area is evenly covered. After 6 hours of joint efforts, they were only able to complete half of the project. The rest of the work is scheduled at a later date.
