“Sound of Chan, Joy of Dharma” Event Series Kicks Off at Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto

June 16, 2024

On June 16th, the “Sound of Chan, Joy of Dharma” event series began in the Chan Garden at Fo Guang Shan (FGS) Temple of Toronto. Guided by Ven. Chueh Fan, the Abbess of FGS Temple of Toronto, and in collaboration with BLIA lay Dharma lecturers, advisors, and Young Adult Division (YAD) members, the event introduced an innovative approach to spreading the Dharma and promoting vegetarianism. Bright sunlight and a gentle breeze perfectly encapsulated the gathering's theme of “Sunshine in the Heart.”

Venerables and Lay Dharma Lecturers shared their interpretations of the theme, emphasizing how positive mindsets illuminate our hearts. Drawing inspiration from "Sound of the Human World," initiated by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the program featured an energetic lineup of dance and music. Around a hundred devotees attended the event, experiencing a sense of carefreeness and Dharma joy, accompanied by delicious vegetarian snacks.

The joyous atmosphere, led by Dharma lecturers and YAD members, infused enthusiasm among the audience. John Lu's story, "A Simple Change of Mind," highlighted the importance of positive thinking. Oliver Wang, a YAD member, shared how he manifested sunshine in his heart through acts of kindness, expressing joy and accomplishment in serving others as a volunteer.

Mr. Li Sun, the President of the Da Tzu Subchapter 3, quoted a passage from the liturgy of the Three Contemplation Amitabha Service: “Buddha-Dharma enlightens the minds of those who seek their Buddha nature from within.” He explained how ignorance and enlightenment are inherently the same, just as there is no distinction between the minds of Buddhas and sentient beings.

A dance performance, "Connecting Hearts," brought a boost of energy to the audience. Winnie Kwong praised how the youth gained self-mastery by skillfully observing the causes and conditions of every moment. She also shared insights into the song's composition in 2019, emphasizing the unity of the FGS community in overcoming challenges.

A special vocal performance by Ven. Man Long and Ms. Sue Hutchison was one of the most memorable moments of the event. They sang “What is Happiness?” from the Sound of Human World’s. “Any time in the Fo Guang community is a happy time. FGS is a big family that embraces all who stop by,” said Ven. Man Long.

In concluding remarks, Ven. Zhi Guan pointed out that this innovative event, encompassing the Dharma, music, and vegetarian food, is meant to delight the devotees. “We will have an unending source of confidence and faith as long as we practice the right thinking and develop the right view,” said Ven. Zhi Guan.

Temple volunteers served vegetarian delights, including fresh veggie sandwiches, handmade nut cookies, crystal blue jelly, and beverages. As a gesture to promote environmentalism, the volunteers encouraged attendees to support Vege Plan A. With encouragement for everyone to see the ray of sunshine in their hearts, the wonderful gathering came to a close.
