On December 28, the Markham Campus of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto Humanistic Buddhist Courses hosted a vibrant Talent Sharing Event, bringing together over 100 participants, including students, instructors, and families.The event featured performances by the Tai Chi, Martial Arts, Health Dance, Yoga, and Guzheng classes, highlighting the strong sense of community at the learning center. Special guests included Venerable Chueh Fan, Abbess of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto; Venerable Ru An, Social and Education Director; and Ms. Betty Young, Coordinator of the Markham Social Education Group.
In her opening remarks, Venerable Chueh Fan emphasized the Fo Guang Shan tradition of prioritizing education, noting that developing talents enriches lives and helps spread the Dharma. She praised the dedication of instructors and students, which shone through in their inspiring performances and demonstrations. Highlights included yoga demonstrations explaining techniques for muscle relaxation and a Guzheng ensemble performance of Man Must Striveto Be Strong. A duet of Fisherman’s Song at Dusk captivated the audience with its beautiful and evocative melody.
Tai Chi students paid a heartfelt tribute to their instructor, Mr. Andrew Ho, who joined the event via video conferencing despite health challenges. Their carefully prepared performance featured Tai Chi fists, fans, and swords, expressing gratitude for his mentorship.
In closing, Venerable Ru An commended the diverse courses offered at the Markham Center and highlighted Betty Young’s over 20 years of dedication to fostering cultural and personal growth. She encouraged students to cherish these opportunities, emphasizing that developing talents builds resilience and determination.
To honor the instructors’ selfless contributions, Venerable Chueh Fan presented them with Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s The Path of Self-Learning. She concluded the event by announcing a Wellness Day planned for the coming year, integrating health and art to promote wellness and collaboration among students and teachers. The event reaffirmed Fo Guang Shan’s commitment to Humanistic Buddhism’s mission of education and cultural enrichment.
