On July 21, the Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, in collaboration with the Buddha's Light International Association (BLIA) Toronto Chapter, hosted the "2024 Humanistic Buddhism Series Life Lecture." The event featured Lay Dharma Teacher John Lu from the BLIA, who shared profound teachings on life as imparted by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, under the theme "Taking Light Matters Seriously or Lightening Heavy Matters."

The lecture, attended by over a hundred members, aimed to explore the integration of Buddhist wisdom into daily life. Venerable Ru Zhong, Superintendent of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, emphasized that attending such lectures represents a form of collective practice. The theme of the lecture deeply resonated with both the BLIA committees and members, underscoring the importance of adopting Venerable Master Hsing Yun's wisdom in both interpersonal interactions and the execution of tasks.

John Lu began by elucidating theconcept of "lightening heavy matters," detailing how Venerable Master Hsing Yun exemplifies endurance, tolerance, humility, and fearlessness. Lu explained that this principle is not about diminishing the significance of challenging tasks but rather about cultivating a mindset that eases the process of overcoming difficulties. He shared personal experiences and problem-solving strategies, highlighting how self-reflection and examination can enhance one's approach to both professional and personal challenges.

The lecture also delved into the notion of "taking light matters seriously," emphasizing the importance of diligently addressing small tasks to ensure success in more significant endeavors. Lu explained that this approach requires not dismissing minor responsibilities but recognizing their role in achieving broader goals. Conversely, "lightening heavy matters" involves using wisdom andcourage to navigate and resolve challenges effortlessly.

Kim Chen, Vice President of BLIA Toronto, expressed gratitude on behalf of the audience, commending John Lu for his insightful presentation. Chen acknowledged that Venerable Master HsingYun’s teachings demonstrate how integrating wisdom and compassion into daily life leads to a balanced, harmonious, and joyful existence.
