The 6th Meadowvale Scouts (Toronto Buddha’s Light Scout) successfully concluded their 2024 Winter Food Drive, exemplifying the spirit of the"Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings." On November 28, Food Banks Mississauga collected seven large boxes of donations, praising the Scouts and the Fo Guang community for their heartfelt commitment to giving back. This year’s effort resulted in over 1,050 pounds of vegetarian food and CAD$1,503 in monetary contributions, offering warmth and hope to families in need during the winter season.
The Venturer Scouts described the drive as more than a service project—it was a meaningful opportunity to demonstrate leadership, teamwork, and compassion while living out Humanistic Buddhist values.
The event was skillfully organized and executed by the Venturer Scouts in collaboration with their leaders. Over two weekends, from November 16 to 24, the Scouts worked in shifts to accept donations, carefully inspect food items for expiry dates, and sort them by type to ensure safety and efficiency. This meticulous coordination showcased the Scouts' sense of responsibility and dedication to supporting the community.
The food drive focused on non-perishable vegetarian items, including canned goods (soups, vegetables, fruits), dry staples (pasta, rice, beans), oatmeal, grains, tea, and hot chocolate. By emphasizing vegetarian donations, the drive not only met the needs of local families but also promoted plant-based living within the community. The Scouts’ collective effort resulted in surpassing last year’s achievements, inspiring them to continue making a difference.
Food Banks Mississauga reported a sharp increase in demand, with nearly 16,000 children now relying on food banks—a 42% rise compared to last year. The 6thMeadowvale Scout’s Winter Food Drive was a timely response, providing critical support to vulnerable families and reminding the community of the importance of giving back.
