On May 7th , 2023, in memory of Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the Richmond Hill 1, 2 & 3 Subchapters of BLIA Toronto jointly held the flower arrangement and sutra transcription event at Markham Buddha’s Light Center. Venerable Miao Zun, the subchapters’ Monastic Advisor, and teachers from the Ikebana flower arrangements team, led the floral arrangement workshop. They expressed their remembrance and gratitude to the Master through Ikebana and sutra transcribing. A total of 68 board members, the subchapter advisors, and BLIA members attended the workshop.
Presidents of the three subchapters, Sally Kwok, Peyton Kong, and Grace Ho, delivered speeches welcoming everyone and explained that the event was held to express gratitude to the Venerable Master Hsing Yun. Both flower arrangement and sutra transcribing require a peaceful mind and focused attention on each moment, making them a form of spiritual practice. They also hoped that everyone's remembrance of the Master could be transformed into hope and strength to actively promote Humanistic Buddhism.
After the completing the sutra transcribing, the venerable gave a Dharma talk on the four kinds of merits of sutra transcription: first, it helps to cultivate one's own character and nature; second, it deepens one's understanding of the Buddhist scriptures; third, it fosters compassion and loving-kindness; and fourth, it benefits oneself and others.
For the flower arrangement workshop, Ikebana flower arrangement instructors and subchapter’s advisor Ida Li were invited to lead the team and teachers including Teresa, Trish, and Siena to demonstrate and provide guidance. Everyone used their creativity to create their own unique designs.
Venerable Miao Tsun led everyone in reciting the "Prayer for Venerable Master Hsing Yun" to pay tribute to the Master. Grace Ho concluded that as long as everyone practices three acts of goodness and four givings in daily life, it is the best way to remember and honor the Master.
