On February 18, the Gathering of Ward 9 Religious Leaders was held at Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, bringing together faith and community representatives to discuss pressing social issues and enhance interfaith cooperation. The meeting was chaired by Mississauga Ward 9 and Peel Region Councillor Martin Reid and attended by 23 representatives from various religious organizations, including Islamic centers, Christian denominations, Baptists, Presbyterians, Anglicans, and the Salvation Army. Representing the temple’s Abbess, Venerable Chueh Fan, Venerable Zhi Guan and Venerable Ru An participated in the discussions.

The primary focus of the meeting was the issue of homelessness in the Meadowvale area. Government and municipal representatives presented current challenges and available support programs. Nicole Carasco, Supervisor of Housing Services at Peel Region, reported that emergency shelters are operating at over 300% capacity due to rising housing costs and increased demand. She highlighted the need for expanded services, including mobile outreach, new housing subsidies, and employment support.

Jabari Lindsay, Director of Income and Social Support for Peel Region, provided an overview of the Ontario Works (OW) program, which offers financial aid, medical benefits, and job assistance. He noted a sharp rise in OW applications since the pandemic, widening the gap between social assistance and the actual cost ofliving. Vee Clarke, Community Development Coordinator at Open Window Hub, discussed accessibility challenges, emphasizing the need for Sunday meal services, laundry facilities, and additional support for seniors.

Following the presentations, religious representatives engaged in discussions and expressed support for these initiatives. It was also announced that religious organizations’ activities would be incorporated into Ward 9 communications toraise public awareness and encourage greater community participation.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Venerable Zhi Guan led a tour of Fo Guang Shan Temple, introducing the philosophy ofHumanistic Buddhism as advocated by Venerable Master Hsing Yun.
