Toronto Buddha’s Light Scouts Heartwarming Tradition of Apple Day

Each year, Scouts eagerly prepare for one of their most beloved events - Apple Day. The event provides our Scouting youth with an opportunity to show their appreciation to the general public for their support throughout the year. In Toronto, the 6th Meadowvale Scout group, also known as Toronto Buddha's Light Scout, has faithfully continued this tradition since their formation in 1997.

Promoting Three Acts of Goodness without Playing Trick

On October 29th, the Fo Guang Shan (FGS) Temple of Toronto Chinese School and Children’s English Dharma Class co-hosted a Halloween celebration with the theme of “Promoting Three Acts of Goodness, No Tricks.” The event was an opportunity to educate kids about the importance of practicing the Three Acts of Goodness while promoting the virtues of truthfulness, kindness, and beauty.

Forging a Connection with the Master Through Literature: Gathering of Toronto's Humanistic Buddhism Reading Groups

On October 22, amid the beautiful Fall in Canada, the Toronto Humanistic Buddhism Reading Association, consisting of 24 reading groups, gathered at the Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto. All participants studied the Dharma Words of Venerable Master Hsing Yun from 'The Complete Works of Venerable Master Hsing Yun together. They also conveyed their appreciation and paid tribute to the Master, drawing from his wisdom and establishing a profound connection with him.

Toronto Buddha’s Light YAD Caring for the Elderly: Spreading Joy through the Sounds of the Human World

The Toronto Buddha’s Light Young Adult Division (YAD) and volunteers from the Buddha’s Light Caring Group visited the Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care in Mississauga on October 21st, just before the Double Ninth Festival. Their aim was to bring happiness and blessings to the elderly residents through performances and interactions.

BLIA Toronto YAD Welcome Gathering - Understanding Humanistic Buddhism

On October 15th, BLIA Toronto Young Adult Division (YAD) held a gathering to welcome new members. New members had the opportunity to get to know each other through ice-breaking games, temple tours, pumpkin painting, and paying respects to the Buddha. They also had the opportunity to interact with the monastics.

Community Crime Awareness Day in Toronto: Fo Guang Shan Toronto Promotes Humanistic Buddhism

On October 1st, thousands of people gathered at Celebration Square in Mississauga to celebrate the annual "Peel District Community Crime Awareness Day." Venerable Zhi Guan, representing Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto and the Buddha's Light International Association, attended the event. The opening ceremony was attended by senators, members of parliament, provincial and municipal representatives, the head of Peel Regional Police, and the head of the Fire Department. The Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto Dragon and Lion Dance Team was invited again, adding an exciting celebratory atmosphere to the event with their spectacular performance.

Heart-to-Heart Dialogue: Venerable Yi Kong Inspires Toronto Youth with Buddhist Wisdom

On the evening of November 16, at the invitation of Venerable Chueh Fan, Abbess of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, Venerable Yi Kong, Elder Venerable of the Fo Guang Shan Monastery and Director of the Fo Guang Shan Culture Council, engaged in an intimate and insightful dialogue with nearly 50 young participants from the Fo Guang Toronto Youth Academy and the Toronto Young Adult Division (YAD). The gathering encouraged a meaningful exploration of the deep connection between Buddhism and youth, offering valuable perspectives on Buddhist practice, life choices, and personal growth.

Building Bridges 2024 Interfaith Council of Peel General Meeting at FGS Toronto

On November 13, Fo Guang Shan (FGS) Temple of Toronto welcomed participants to the Interfaith Council of Peel’s Annual General Meeting. 30 representatives from 12 religious and community organizations gathered both in person and online. The event brought together a diverse interfaith community, including voices from Christianity, Catholicism, Judaism, Islam, Baháʼí, Hinduism, and Buddhism. Governmental representatives from the Region of Peel, Peel Regional Police Religious Affairs Office, Peel Newcomer Strategy Group, and Metamorphosis Network also attended.

Exploring New Opportunities for Collaboration in Humanistic Buddhist Education

On November 7, Rev. Dr. Christopher Brittain, Dean of Divinity at Trinity College, University of Toronto, visited Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto to gain insights into Humanistic Buddhism and explore potential collaborative initiatives. He was joined by Dr. Jizhang Yi, Adjunct Professor and Fellow in Religious Philosophy, and graduate student Miao Lin. The delegation received a warm welcome from Abbess Venerable Chueh Fan of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, along with Superintendent Venerable Zhi Guan, Venerable Ru An, Social Education Department Supervisor, and University of Toronto alumna Cindy Choi.

Buddha’s Light Scout Toronto Group’s 2024 Fall Camp A Journey of Peace through Scouting and the Three Acts of Goodness

From November 1 to November 3, the 6th Meadowvale Scout Group (Buddha’s Light Toronto Scouts) gathered at the historic Blue Spring Scout Camp near Milton for a memorable fall camp. Designed to develop outdoor skills and promote teamwork, the event was organized by dedicated Scout leaders and enthusiastically attended by the scouts, leaving all participants with lasting memories.
